I hadn't really been expecting what would happen would happen. My leisurely writing pace - accentuated by the sound of my father's clocks in the background <tick-tock-tick-tock>, the creaking of my 100-year-old house as the furnace goes on and off, and the occasional relaxing game of Gabriele Cirulli's 2048 as I consider what next I want to tackle have been completely side swiped! I have been fortunate enough to be hired by the University of Western Ontario as a lecturer in their B.Ed. program - Curriculum and Pedagogy in STEM Education - (3 classes down; 9 to go). Having taught in the K-12 system for as long as I have means I do have lots of practical experience, but that doesn't mean I don't make rookie mistakes, or that I have all the answers. I'm reading through the theories that underpin the practice along with the rest of the class, though, I do hope I'm sharing with them a little of what I've learned along the way about putting theory into practice. |
But saying yes to opportunities means my writing is progressing slower than I had anticipated. My five-day writing week has been reduced by 40% (commuting, class preparation, and the soon to arrive marking that comes with the job). Hey, I knew this going in when I applied and subsequently accepted the position.
Where does that leave me?
I'm feeling more crunched than I had expected I would this fall. I still have transcribing to do, I still have writing to do (I've submitted 2 of 7 chapters; I submitted Chapter 3 - Methodology today), I still have more learning to do. So, for all those students out there working on their own work-life balance... As M.G. (a former student) would say... I feel you.
